This is an exciting time of year with baby owls fledging their boxes, but there are still many sources of danger that these owls will face in their lifetime. One danger that isn’t often considered is open bodies of water, like swimming pools and large buckets. Young owls who are inexperienced flyers may be going into pools for a drink of water or may get blown in by the wind and don’t have a way to get out of the pool. A simple way to help all sorts of wildlife is to cover your pool when it isn’t in use. Unused buckets should be dumped out and left upside down. We get calls every year about owls, raptors, opossums, and all sorts of wildlife that get trapped in the pool before anyone notices.
